Saint Theresa is known as the Saint of the Little Ways.

Tomatoes on Mother’s Day

Well it’s always a good idea to get your garden planted around Mother’s Day here in the Mid-Atlantic. I pleanted my tomatoes today. I had purchased an heirloom package of 8 plants - far more than I need, but my dad love to sneak-pick my garden when I’m off at work.

I’ve found that when planting tomatoes it’s a good idea to plant them deep. I cut off a few of the lower shhots and set them deep. If you happen to have a larger plant you can lay them on their side to get more of the stem under ground. It will shoot out roots readily and be much lower maintanance in the end. I also give them a boost with about a gallon size container of compost. (Click here for more on compost bins ).

I’m also trying the orange plastic mulch for the first time (and it’s about time). I’ll keep you posted as to how it works out.

My pick for best heirloom tomato - Brandywine - It’s big-juicy-meaty and tastey! If you haven’t tried it yet go get yourself one and let me know what you thnk.
