Lettuce - Black Seeded Simpson

The Lettuce Leaf Black Seeded Simpson, 'Lactuca sativa', has a delicate flavor and the plant withstands heat, drought, and light frost. If you want to produce a fast lettuce crop, this is the variety. The Black Seeded Simpson is an old favorite, both because of it's flavor and because of it's earliness. The full sized leaves can be harvested in just a little over a month and "greens" can be harvested in 3 weeks. Black Seeded Simpson has crinkled green leaves and the leaves at the center of the plant are almost white when allowed to grow to full maturity. Lettuce is a cool season annual. Successive plantings can produce lettuce spring through fall. Plant in early spring, 3 to 4 weeks before the average last frost date, and successive plantings thereafter every 3 weeks until 5 weeks before fall frost. Sorrel - Common The Sorrel or Common Sorrel, 'Rumex acetosa', is a hardy perennial. Sorrel is an underutilized vegetable in the United States and unjustifiably so. Sorrel is very high in Vitamin C and has many uses. The young tender spring leaves can be used as salad greens, famous for Cream of Sorrel soup, cooked like spinach and served with trout or salmon, or mixed in with cooked spinach or chard. The fresh leaves are used by some to soothe canker sores. Once you try Sorrel, it will become as regular a garden plant as spinach. The plant is also called Sour Dock, Herb Patience, and Patience Dock. Plant the Sorrel 2 weeks before the average last frost date. In mild climates, Sorrel can be planted in the fall. Sorrel prefers a moderately acid soil and the soil needs to be kept moist for the best flavor and production.
